Boxies are compact, interactive devices for audio experiences. Their key feature is open audio (so no headphones), which guarantees a shared experience.
How does it work?

By scanning a card (or any other object) with an NFC tag against the Boxie, you instantly bring audio to life. This can be an assignment, a music fragment, or an immersive story. Or the start of a game! Whatever you like.

With cards, objects, textiles…

The tags are tiny and can be integrated in all kinds of ways. In cards you take along on a tour, or in objects you encounter along the way. In clothing or in walls. In books or name badges… The possibilities are endless.

For museum tours

Museums can easily enrich an exhibition with Boxies, without making major changes to the exhibition design itself.

This makes exhibitions more accessible to new or specific audiences: families with young children, school groups, or expert visitors who want more in-depth information.

…or workshops

Boxies are also great as tools in workshops. Place a Boxie in the middle of the table and, for example, play a (historical) version of Hitster together!

With your logo or house style colours

Because we produce the Boxies ourselves, they can be customised with your own logo, colours and materials (only if you buy them, of course).

For the Wereldmuseum, we tested various materials and colours.

An open audio system: no subscription or hidden costs

The Boxie’s open system doesn’t just mean ‘open’ audio (without headphones), but also an open system that allows you to customize the content yourself. No subscription or hidden costs.

Small quantities

We also don’t require a minimum order quantity. This makes the Boxie an accessible option for smaller museums as well, whether for educational projects or public programming.

For the Wereldmuseum, we tested a range of different materials and colours.

Adding or changing audio

Audio can easily be added or replaced by yourself.

Connect the Boxie to your computer using a USB-C cable. It will appear as an external drive, allowing you to drag and drop files directly from your computer. Then, using a simple app on your phone, you link the NFC tags to the audio files on the Boxie. Done!

What does it cost?

You can purchase the Boxies or rent them (per 10 weeks). Please feel free to request a quote from us for the current pricing (prices of components fluctuate due to circumstances). For purchase, expect a price between €250 and €300 per Boxie (excl. VAT). Please note: these prices exclude lanyards and chargers and do not include content development.

Content development

Curious about the cost of content development by us? We have extensive experience creating engaging concepts, texts and audio for a wide range of audiences—using professional voice actors or (more affordable, but very good) computer voices. We’d be happy to explore the possibilities with you!

The bamboo Boxie for the Municipality of The Hague
We’re already on Boxie 2.0!

Together with six museums, we developed Boxie 2.0 during a workshop. One of the requests was for a wooden version, which is now in use at The Municipality of The Hague and Stedelijk Museum Kampen. We also made a number of less visible improvements in terms of compatibility and connectivity. For example, Boxie 2.0 can now communicate with our Showmie.

Who’s already using Boxie?

On our projects page, you’ll find various examples of how Boxie can be used. In addition to these more extensive examples, Fireware uses Boxies for training purposes, while Vuurrood used them for a sustainability project for the Municipality of Dijk en Waard. And at Dutch Design Week in 2025, they could be heard at the Muzus stand.
